WHEN ARE SUMP PUMPS NECESSARY?

The question that most homeowners ask is “Do I need a sump pump?” , and “When are sump pumps necessary?”. In this article, we will go over the main facts that will help you decide if installing a sump pump is a good idea for your home.

What Is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is designed to remove water and excess moisture from your basement. The sump pump is installed at the lowest point of your basement floor. Once properly installed the sump pump system controls how water gathers beneath your home while collecting the water through a filter trap. This directs the water outside and away from foundation using a discharge pipe to prevent moisture levels rising in your home.

Most homes have a sump pit below their foundation, depending on home location and age. When gravity drainage doesn’t work, the Ontario builders code requires a sump pump to be installed. Although homeowners may decide to have a sump pump installed if their basement begins leaking or showing signs of water damage.

How Do Sump Pumps Work?

The average lifespan for a sump pump is 10 years. The pump runs on electricity connected to your home power supply, in case of a power outage you should always have a battery backup.

Sump pumps work by pulling the water that it has collected into the sump pit which then goes into the sewer, dry well, or drainage ditch. When excessive rainfall or snow melting off elevated groundwater. The sump pump has an automatic switch that activates once the water reaches a certain level in order to remove the water. The main purpose is to keep water out of your basement.

Does Your Home Need a Sump Pump?

Evidence of water in your basement in a clear indication that you need to find the solution to the cause of the water. Any damage to your drywall, flooring, or wall coverings is a result of moisture, meaning you would need waterproofing done.

A sump pump installation is important if you have had:

  • Past water problems.
  • If your house is on flat land with little drainage, in a region with strong snowfalls or raining, or on poorly draining soil.
  • Ageing pump.

Overall a sump pump will defend your home against a wet basement or a basement flooding. It will protect wall coverings and paint from peeling as well as protect metal appliances from corrosion. The Sump Pump will also prevent moulds, mildew, fungus and insect infestation.
