Checklist for a Dry Basement in the Winter – ACCL Waterproofing

Checklist for a Dry Basement in the Winter

It’s that time of year again: winter. You know what we’re talking about if you reside in the Delaware Valley. Melting snow and ice on the ground might lead to unpleasant water accumulating in your basement throughout the winter. If not properly managed, this can become a moist breeding ground for mold and mildew.

Here’s our Winter maintenance checklist to keep your basement dry all winter long so there are no nasty, moldy surprises in the spring.

Examine your window wells

Window wells are great for keeping moisture out of your house, but they need to be checked on a regular basis to make sure they aren’t clogged with dirt. You may have a basement leak if the water in the wells pools instead of flowing out.

Fill up any cracks in the wall

The heat from your basement may cause snow or frozen water in the ground to melt if your house is surrounded by ice or snow. Even unfinished basements can generate enough heat to produce water seepage in this way. You might notice leaks and damp places if your basement isn’t waterproofed.

As water seeps through the cracks in your basement walls, it may flow into your home. Over time, the pressure from this water may cause cracks in your basement walls. If you have existing wall cracks, water can easily enter your basement through them. To avoid this, seal any cracks as soon as feasible.

Drain & Gutters Unclogging

Basement flooding and leaks are surprisingly common due to clogged gutters and drains. Water can back up and overflow into your basement due to debris clogging your drains. Also inspect your downspouts. It’s likely that if they pour water on the ground near your foundation, it will leak into your basement.

At least once a month, check your gutters for debris, or hire a professional to do it for you. If you have a long ladder, you may inspect them yourself, but remember to take the proper safety precautions when cleaning your gutters.

Examine Your Sump Pump

Sump pumps aren’t just for keeping your basement dry; if yours isn’t working properly, water will gather and could potentially flood your basement. It’s vital to keep an eye on your sump pump on a frequent basis to make sure it’s still working.

It’s also important to have it serviced regularly. We recommend having your sump pump inspected by a professional at least twice a year, in the spring and fall, to ensure that all of the components are working correctly and that there is no trapped dirt or debris.

All year long, it’s critical to take precautions against basement leaks and floods, but winter has its own set of obstacles. To avoid a worsening situation, address any basement leak as soon as feasible.
